Healthy Heart

Healthy Heart Programme

The Healthy Heart Programme has been designed as an intensive exercise in the early identification and management of risk factors for our biggest killer, heart disease. Today we have some answers.

Our typical patients are motivated to avoid a future heart attack, stroke, or vascular event.

They may be aware of existing risk factors, such as family history, high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes.

Or they may want an answer to suspicious symptoms, such as chest pain, increasing fatigue or palpitations.

After our process,at whichever level of assessment is deemed appropriate by the client, patients have a sense of certainty as to the state of their cardiac and general health. They have a clear plan of management , and, in general,  are confident about their future with family and friends. Details of the levels of assessment, and approximate costs (there are no surprises!), are set out below.

A True Story

Neil survived a frugal post-depression upbringing, lots of study, and a world war. He wanted to make a difference. Family first, finances constrained, good enough was never an option. Yet sports, and a social life, always found a place. Recognition came with an overseas fellowship. Validation was a daughter’s wedding and his son’s graduations.  And then … a fatal heart attack.

He was never to participate in a future involving daughters-in-law, grandchildren, huge family Christmas gatherings, beaching at The Coast, backyard cricket, golf weekends, cold beers, and ‘Gabba Tests.

The legacy of a generous life insurance policy gave cold comfort to those he left behind.

Our three levels of assessment:

Procedure Description Cost Out of Pocket
Level 1_Basic 150 50
Basic Risk Score A risk calculation is made based on age, BP, cholesterol level, family history, diabetes, smoking
Resting ECG ECG – computer interpreted
Procedure Description Cost Out of Pocket
Level 2 – Advanced CV Risk Assessment 350 100 if Medicare compliant
Metabolic Study Metabolic Study: From a blood sample, measuring cholesterol, glucose, kidney and liver function, as well as extended risk factors homocysteine, Lipoprotein A
Exercise Stress Test Exercise Stress Test: Examines heart function during exercise. A normal test gives a low probability of blocked arteries. In addition an assessment of exercise capacity relative to age is made as a test of general fitness.
Absolute CV Risk Calculation Interactive Risk Calculator: Calculates risk and results of actions which can be modified
Procedure Description Cost Out of Pocket
Level 3 – CVS Risk Assessment Advanced 750 300 if Medicare compliant
AOBP Automated Office BP. After 3 minutes rest three recordings are made and averaged
Heart Rate Variability Heart Rate Variability: A five minute, non-invasive monitor of heart rate to determine the function of the Autonomic Nervous System
Pulse Wave Analysis Pulse Wave Analysis: Performed using a Syphgmocor, an Australian technology – to measure the wave form of the pulse at the wrist. This technology enables an assessment of Arterial Stiffness, Central Heart Pressure and Perfusion
Ankle Brachial Index Ankle Brachial Index: A comparison of blood pressures between upper and lower limb. Gives an estimation of circulation in the lower limbs whereby minor changes in ABI can predict increased cardiovascular risk.
Exercise Stress Test Exercise Stress Test: Examines heart function during exercise. A normal test gives a low probability of blocked arteries. In addition an assessment of exercise capacity relative to age is made as a test of general fitness.
Absolute CV Risk Assessment Interactive Risk Calculator: Calculates risk and results of actions which can be modified
Management Plan Targets for lifestyle factors, BP, cholesterol are defined with written instruction as to how to achieve. 300 100 if Medicare compliant
